KEY SCRIPTURE
“On his robe at his thigh was written this title: King of all kings and Lord of all Lords.”
(Revelation 19:16 NLT)
WHO IS THE KING OF KINGS?
There is no kingdom without a king, and you cannot belong to two kingdoms.
We have the Kingdom of God and the Kingdom of darkness. You either belong to the kingdom of God or you belong to the kingdom of darkness where devil torment his subjects.
There is no sitting on the fence. Let us read 1 Kings 18:21:
“And Elijah came unto all the people, and said, How long halt ye between two opinions? if the LORD be God, follow him: but if Baal, then follow him. And the people answered him not a word.” ( KJV)
You know the outcome of the contest that followed on Mount Carmel. The King of kings prevailed while Baal and his followers were discomfited.
As believers, we belong to the kingdom of God. Let us stand firm and be counted.
So, if the kingdom of God is in your heart, there must be a king over your heart and that king is the Lord Jesus Christ.
He reigns in our hearts to bring down the power of satan, the powers of darkness and the power of sin.
Psalm 24:7 says:
“Lift up your heads O ye gates, be ye lift up, ye everlasting doors and the King of glory shall come in.” (KJV)
The gates here refer to our hearts. That is where the doors are situated. Nothing can hinder the move of the King of kings.
The King of glory wants to come in. Revelation 3:20 says:
“Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice and open the door, I will come in and will sup with him, and he with me.” (KJV)
WHY DO WE CALL CHRIST THE KING OF KINGS?
We call Him the King of kings for the following reasons:
1. A king must have a throne
Jesus has a throne. Revelation 3:21 says:
“Those who are victorious will sit with me on my throne, just as I was victorious and sat with my Father on his throne.” (NLT)
2. A King must have a crown
There is no King without a Crown. Jesus has a crown.
In Revelation 6:2, reference was made to His crown:
“I looked up and saw a white horse standing there. Its rider carried a bow, and a crown was placed on his head. He rode out to win many battles and gain the victory.” (NLT)
3. A king must have a sceptre
This is the staff of authority. Jesus has a staff of authority. Hebrews 1:8 tells us that Jesus has a sceptre of righteousness:
“But to the Son he says, “Your throne, O God, endures forever and ever. You rule with a scepter of justice.” (NLT)
4. A king must have a sharp instrument of Leadership
This is an instrument with which to lead because he is a defender of his people. In the case of Jesus, He has a sword.
In Revelation 17:14, we are told that He fights wars:
“Together they will go to war against the Lamb, but the Lamb will defeat them because he is Lord of all lords and King of all kings. And his called and chosen and faithful ones will be with him.” (NLT)
5. A King must have power
Ecclesiastes 8:4 says:
“Where the word of a king is, there is power and who may say unto him, what doest thou?” (NLT)
His command is backed by great power. No one can resist or question it.
6. He has dominion.
Daniel 7:27 reads:
“Then the sovereignty, power, and greatness of all the kingdoms under heaven will be given to the holy people of the Most High. His kingdom will last forever, and all rulers will serve and obey him.” (NLT)
Jesus has control. He is in charge of the Kingdoms.
7. He is the King of kings.
This is because nothing can stand in the way of His reign and authority.
Ephesians 1:21 tells us that He has been given a name that is above all principalities, powers, might and dominion. His reign is eternal and is superior to the temporal reign of the kings of the world.
We are His subjects and we are also kings. Revelation 1:6 says:
“He has made us a Kingdom of priests for God his Father. All glory and power to him forever and ever! Amen.” (NLT)
We are kings but He is a higher King.
HIS DISTINGUISHING ATTRIBUTES
Let us consider only six distinguishing attributes of the King of kings.
1. All power belongs to Him
Matthew 28:18 KJV:
“And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth.”
There can be no other power than that of Jesus because He used the word “all.” No wonder His enemies are subdued under Him.
At his name every knee must bow:
“Therefore, God elevated him to the place of highest honor and gave him the name above all other names,
that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth,
and every tongue declare that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.” (Philippians 2:9-11 NLT)
2. He’s the Creator of Heaven and Earth
Genesis 1:1-3 says:
“In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters. And God said, Let there be light: and there was light.” (KJV)
3. Nothing is impossible with him
During his encounter with the rich young ruler who was reluctant to part with his possessions, Jesus explained to his disciples in Matthew 19:26:
“But Jesus beheld them, and said unto them, With men this is impossible; but with God all things are possible.” (KJV)
The angel similarly told Mary in Luke 1:37:
“For with God nothing shall be impossible.” (KJV)
4. He has no expiry date
Of his kingdom there shall be no end. Isaiah 9:7 says:
“Of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to order it, and to establish it with judgment and with justice from henceforth even for ever. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will perform this.” (KJV)
1 Timothy 6:16 also says:
“He alone is the immortal God, living in the unapproachable light of divine glory! No one has ever seen his fullness, nor can they, for all the glory and endless authority of the universe belongs to him, forever and ever. Amen!” (TPT)
5. He does not lord it over others
Unlike the kings of the earth, He would rather wash his disciples’ feet than lord it over them.
Let us read John 13:4-5:
“So he got up from the table, took off his robe, wrapped a towel around his waist, and poured water into a basin. Then he began to wash the disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel he had around him.” (NLT)
He warned his disciples not to follow the pattern of the rulers of the world as highlighted in Matthew 20:25-26:
“But Jesus called them together and said, “You know that the rulers in this world Lord it over their people, and officials flaunt their authority over those under them. But among you it will be different. Whoever wants to be a leader among you must be your servant,” (NLT)
6. He confounds the kings of the earth
The King of kings confounded an earthly king as he showed up as the fourth man in the fire with Shedrach, Meshach and Abednego.
Daniel 3:24-25 KJV:
“Then Nebuchadnezzar the king was astonied, and rose up in haste, and spake, and said unto his counsellors, Did not we cast three men bound into the midst of the fire? They answered and said unto the king, True, O king. He answered and said, Lo, I see four men loose, walking in the midst of the fire, and they have no hurt; and the form of the fourth is like the Son of God.”
No king compares to the King of kings.
But we have obligations as kingdom citizens just as we have privileges. We shall consider them one after the other.
OBLIGATIONS OF KINGDOM CITIZENS
So what are the obligations of kingdom citizens? Let us consider six.
1. To seek after Him and Jesus (His Righteousness)
Matthew 6:33 reads:
“But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.” (KJV)
2. To know Him and His Will through His Word
In knowing Him in His Word we become like Him. John 17:3 reads:
“Now this is eternal life: that they may know You, the only true [supreme and sovereign] God, and [in the same manner know] Jesus [as the] Christ whom You have sent.” (AMP)
Knowing Him builds our understanding of Him and his will as 1 John 5:20 makes us to understand:
“We know also that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding, so that we may know him who is true. And we are in him who is true by being in his Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life.” (NIV)
3. Obedience
John 14:15-16 reads:
“If you love me, keep my commands. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever.” (NIV)
4. Forgiveness of others
We are enjoined in Matthew 6:14-15 to learn to forgive:
“For if ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you:
But if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.” (KJV)
5. Prayers
John 14:13 assures us of answered prayers:
And whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son.” (KJV)
6. Fellowship with one another
Hebrews 10:24-25 forbids us to forsake the gathering of the saints:
“And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works:
Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is ; but exhorting one another : and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.” (KJV)
PRIVILEGES OF KINGDOM CITIZENS
What do we stand to gain by belonging to the kingdom of the King of kings? Let us look at some kingdom privileges.
1. Salvation
We’re no longer strangers to the commonwealth of Israel. Romans 10:12-13 states as follows:
“For there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek: for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon him.
For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.” (KJV)
2. Defence
The King of kings is our strong defence. Psalm 91:9-11 assures us:
“Because thou hast made the Lord, which is my refuge, even the most High, thy habitation;
There shall no evil befall thee, neither shall any plague come nigh thy dwelling.
For he shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways.” (KJV)
3. Prosperity
We are guaranteed prosperity in 2 Corinthians 8:9:
“For ye know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that, though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, that ye through his poverty might be rich.” (KJV)
4. Personal attention and audience with the King of kings
He gives us personal attention and audience. Hebrews 4:15-16 says:
“For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin.
Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.” (KJV)
5. Healing
Healing is part of the package. 2 Chronicles 7:14 says:
“If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.” (KJV)
6. Fear is destroyed
He has not given us the spirit of fear as 2 Timothy 1:6-7 assures us:
“Wherefore I put thee in remembrance that thou stir up the gift of God, which is in thee by the putting on of my hands.
For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.” (KJV)
7. No accusation of the devil shall stand against us
Our salvation silences the accuser. Revelation 12:10 says:
“And I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, Now is come salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of his Christ: for the accuser of our brethren is cast down, which accused them before our God day and night.”
8. There is no condemnation for us
We have escaped bondage of guilt. Romans 8:1 is quite explicit on this:
“Therefore there is now no condemnation [no guilty verdict, no punishment] for those who are in Christ Jesus [who believe in Him as personal Lord and Savior].” (AMP)
There can be no condemnation for us because the King of kings has set us free and we are free indeed. He is not sitting on the throne of judgement but of mercy.
Don’t you wanna be a part of the kingdom of the King of kings?
